I enjoyed this book for its place in history, a fictionalised autobiographical novel about homesteads by a remarkable man. He homesteads, knowing little about it bit works hard and would have succeeded without the betrayal of his wife and father-in-law. He decides he needs to write a book, knows nothing about it but study the process, works on it, and publishes his book and then learns how to market and sell his books. He isn't a great writer but he isn't my worse than james fenimore cooper, bout whom i share mark twains opinion. It's a story only he could tell, and i appreciated reading about a black homesteads by a black homesteads.
